1:40PM: A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for far eastern Okaloosa County in northwest Florida… Strong storms have fired up just east of Crestview near Mossy Head.

Storms have also fired up near Excel, Frisco City, and Uriah in Monroe County. I expect more storms to pop up in the hours ahead. Have those umbrellas handy! We note storms are producing some cloud-to-ground lightning as well.

4:52: Showers and storms have popped up across the area. Nothing severe, but have a look at this radar image to see if your specific community is about to experience heavy rain.

Folks near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches, particularly near Pensacola Beach, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach will likely have rain within the hour…

Tropical Depression Two has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Bonnie. Maximum sustained winds are at 40mph. #Bonnie likely makes landfall in the hours ahead as a minimal tropical storm along the South Carolina coast. No direct effects for southwest Alabama or northwest Florida. Enjoy the evening!

7:02PM: 1) Tropical Depression Two has been upgraded to Tropical Storm Bonnie… Maximum sustained winds are near 40mph, making Bonnie a minimal tropical storm. The center is expected to cross the South Carolina coast overnight… Other than some heavy downpours of rain at times, the system won’t have major effects. Good news!

2) You can also see on this satellite/radar composite image that a few showers and storms have popped up over south Alabama. Most places are dry, but places in eastern Escambia and Covington counties have been wet in the past hour. No severe weather is expected. Tomorrow’s weather will be quite similar to today: Warm, muggy, with a low (but not zero) rain chance. Enjoy the evening!

NICE & WARM… Partly cloudy skies will kick off the Memorial Day weekend today for most folks across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures rise to around 89° in inland locales, while local beaches will have temperatures this afternoon in the low 80s due to the sea breeze.

Traveling today? If you’re headed west, you’re more likely to encounter storms. A marginal, low risk of severe storms is in place for SW Mississippi and a large chunk of Louisiana. If you’re going north or east, conditions will be sunny and warm in places like north Alabama, Georgia, and north Florida. We note a Code Orange air quality alert is in place for metro Atlanta today… Limit outdoor time if you’re headed there!

The tropical system we’ve been closely monitoring (TD #2/Bonnie) will have no direct effects on our weather pattern. It will likely make landfall as a tropical storm later tonight or tomorrow along the South Carolina coast near Charleston.

Skies will look similar to this photo today… These are gorgeous, red flowers in front of D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital. Enjoy the day!

I’m doing TV work tonight and tomorrow night on WVUA 23 in the Birmingham, AL television market. We had a story on our 5PM news about a major Tommee Tippee Sippee cup recall in progress. When you say that many times in a row, you get a news/weather/sports reaction just like this as you’re coming back to the camera on all of us. 🙂 Too funny not to share! Hope you’ll join me tonight at 10 if you’re in the Birmingham TV market. Enjoy the evening!

Tropical Depression Two is now on the board well east of the Atlantic coast of Florida. This system likely becomes Tropical Storm Bonnie in the hours ahead as it moves toward the Carolina coast. The system will likely bring some much needed rain to Georgia and the Carolinas.

I’ll be closely monitoring this system, but again… No threat to Alabama or northwest Florida. Good news!
