JUST IN: Hurricane Matthew has just become a rare, potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane in the central Caribbean Sea. Maximum sustained winds are now near 160 mph with higher gusts. Interests in Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and The Bahamas should closely monitor this system.

While model trends suggest the system moves WELL to our east, this system has the capability to cause major damage in the areas mentioned above. I’ll be closely monitoring Matthew this weekend. Have a great evening!

Hurricane Matthew has just become the first category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic basin since 2007 when Hurricane Felix moved through the Caribbean… Matthew is packing maximum sustained winds near 160 mph with higher gusts. The system likely moves north in the days ahead. While direct local impacts will be little to none, this could be a potentially devastating hurricane for Jamaica, eastern Cuba, or Haiti.

PERFECT WEATHER & MAJOR HURRICANE… Good news and bad news for you on this Friday evening, but for us locally, it’s all good news!

The good news is it’s shaping up to be a gorgeous day across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures are peaking in the upper 70s and low 80s across the board. Brewton, Monroeville, Thomasville are all at 78Β° as of 3:30PM. Mobile is at 80Β° and Pensacola is at 81Β°.

Temperatures will be perfect for high school football today with temperatures in the 60s. You might grab a light jacket if you’re a cold natured person. I’m breaking out the long sleeves for tonight! No rain issues tonight. No rain or weather issues tomorrow for college football across the state of Alabama either! Picture perfect weather across the state…

The bad news is Hurricane Matthew is now a category 3 hurricane packing maximum sustained winds near 120 mph. I wouldn’t be shocked if Matthew makes a run at becoming a strong category 4 or perhaps even a category 5 hurricane in the next day or so as it slowly turns northward in the central Caribbean Sea. Interests in Jamaica, western Cuba, Hispaniola, The Bahamas, and south Florida should monitor this system closely. Model agreement has been strong over the past few runs that the system moves north near/over some of the areas I just mentioned. We’ll be monitoring Hurricane Matthew, but I’m not expecting direct local impacts as of now. Good news for us, but certainly bad news for folks in the central Caribbean!

Tropical Storm Matthew has formed near the Leeward Islands in the far eastern Caribbean Sea. Maximum sustained winds, as measured by hurricane hunter aircraft, are near 60mph.

Matthew will likely become a hurricane in the days ahead. The system will move over the warm waters of the central Caribbean where water heat content is quite high.

There’s plenty of model uncertainty with this system, meaning our area MUST keep an eye on the progress of this system. The good news at the moment (and as I always caution, take this with a grain of salt) is that most model trends indicate Tropical Storm Matthew will make a rather abrupt right turn in the central Caribbean, meaning the likelihood of the system remaining well east of our area is the most likely scenario right now. Again, uncertainty in the medium- and long-term is what we need to remember.

Ever wondered where that radar image on your smartphone comes from? It starts in that radome! Meteorologist @morganabigailwx captured this stunning, stormy view earlier. The radome houses our local NEXRAD weather radar, KMOB. Thanks to Morgan for sharing this representative view of today’s weather and what you can expect tomorrow afternoon.
